2024: Renewables in Singapore – A Year of Milestones and Momentum

This year, Singapore's renewable energy sector achieved significant milestones, reshaping the nation's energy landscape. From record-breaking solar installations to pioneering steps in geothermal energy and carbon markets, 2024 has been a transformative year.

But beyond these achievements, it’s essential to consider: What does this mean for our workforce, skill development, and emerging opportunities?

Reflecting on 2024

Solar’s Big Leap

Singapore’s solar energy capacity saw remarkable growth in 2024. The total installed capacity of grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) systems reached approximately 1,348 megawatt-peak (MWp) by mid-2024—a 5.9% increase from the previous quarter (Source: Energy Market Authority, July 2024). This rapid expansion underscores the escalating demand for engineers, project managers, and innovators to drive large-scale solar projects.

Geothermal Energy Exploration

Singapore’s exploration into geothermal energy represents a strategic move to diversify its energy portfolio. This initiative has opened new opportunities for geoscientists and renewable energy consultants to engage in groundbreaking work, positioning Singapore as a leader in sustainable energy innovation.

Carbon Markets Take Shape

Singapore strengthened its position as Asia’s carbon trading hub, catalyzing the growth of a robust ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) ecosystem. This has fueled demand for carbon analysts, sustainability consultants, and other ESG professionals who are pivotal in helping businesses navigate decarbonization challenges (Source: Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment, October 2024).

What’s Next in 2025?

Looking ahead, several key areas are poised for significant development:

1 - Green Hydrogen

Singapore’s transition to a hydrogen economy is no longer a question of "if" but "when." Companies like Sembcorp are leading initiatives to integrate green hydrogen into Singapore’s energy mix, creating demand for electrolysis specialists, hydrogen storage experts, and logistics professionals (Source: Sembcorp Green Energy Outlook, September 2024).

2 - Battery Storage & Smart Grids

Energy storage and smart grid management are critical to renewable energy’s success. Singapore’s Future Grid Capabilities Roadmap, developed by the Energy Market Authority and SP Group, aims to deploy 200 megawatts (MW) of energy storage systems beyond 2025 to enhance grid resilience and support solar energy integration (Source: Energy Market Authority, August 2024).

3 - Carbon Markets and ESG Strategy

Carbon trading mechanisms are maturing rapidly. The need for carbon market analysts and sustainability advisors is expected to rise as businesses and governments intensify their decarbonization commitments (Source: Singapore Carbon Trading Report, November 2024).

Government Targets and Future Outlook

Singapore’s ambitious renewable energy targets reflect its commitment to sustainability. Under the Singapore Green Plan 2030, the nation aims to deploy at least 2 gigawatt-peak (GWp) of solar energy by 2030 (Source: Singapore Green Plan 2030, February 2023). The Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore (SERIS) estimates the technical potential for up to 8.6 GWp of solar capacity by 2050, which could meet about 10% of projected electricity demand (Source: SERIS Energy Insights, March 2024).

Pause and Reflect

The milestones of 2024 have set a robust foundation for Singapore’s renewable energy future. However, the question remains: Are we prepared for the challenges and opportunities ahead? Do we have the talent pipeline, innovative tools, and strategic vision to sustain and accelerate this momentum?

At Energy Recruit, we understand the importance of bridging talent gaps and equipping organizations with the human capital necessary to thrive in this dynamic environment.
